The real reason you’re drained: It’s not the hours

And how to fix that starting today.
By Raido Kivikangur

Still running on fumes even though you’re doing “everything right”? You’re not broken. You’re just out of sync with what matters.

This guide helps you reconnect with meaningful work: so you become the engineer others admire for clarity, passion, and meaningful output. The one whose boss trusts with tough problems. Whose teammates follow without hesitation. And whose spouse sees the difference when you walk into the room more alive, more present, more proud of what you do. The partner whose energy and purpose light up the home. Your kids feel it too, they see you as the builder who doesn’t just solve technical puzzles, but shows up with purpose.

Let’s bring the spark back.

Why engineers burn out from meaningless work

You don’t feel exhausted because the hours are too long.
You feel exhausted because the work doesn’t matter enough.

You can pull late nights, sprint on tight deadlines, and grind through problems - if the work feels like it means something.

But when you’re stuck in cycles of endless tasks with no visible purpose, your brain shuts down. Motivation turns into fatigue.

You start asking, Why am I even doing this?
That question eats away at your energy more than the workload ever could.

Reconnect to what actually matters

1. Define your impact, not just your output
Don't just ship features. Ask: What user problem am I solving?
When engineers feel connected to outcomes, not just tasks, energy flows.

I worked with a backend engineer who had quietly lost motivation. He spent weeks on technical cleanup that nobody noticed. When we reframed his role around user impact, he redesigned one critical flow that sped up onboarding by 30%. The difference? He felt like it mattered - and he came home energized.

2. Revisit your own why
Maybe your goal is to grow, lead or design systems that last.
If your calendar doesn’t reflect that, it’s time to realign. Small changes create powerful course corrections.

One client realized his true drive was to lead, not just code. So he began mentoring juniors 1 hour each week. A small shift, but it lit him up.

3. Say no to dead work
Dead work = work that nobody uses, sees, or values.
Audit your tasks this week. What can you remove, delegate, or stop? Then actually do it. Your energy is worth protecting.

4. Build one thing that matters
Even if the rest of your day is full of noise - start your morning with something you care about.
It’s the momentum anchor. The creator's spark.

I’ve seen engineers spend just 20 minutes on a passion project each day and it flipped their entire mindset. Suddenly the day didn’t feel like a blur of meetings. It felt purposeful.

5. Use Raido’s filter: Purpose → Leverage → Energy
Ask: Does this task serve a purpose? Is it leveraged? Does it energize or drain me?
If the answer is no across the board - eliminate or redesign it. And yes, even your team will thank you for killing off zombie tasks.

A senior engineer once told me about his first job at a big firm. Every week he’d stay late, patching minor bugs and chasing edge cases nobody cared about. When he finally presented his work, his manager said: "Why did you spend time on this? Our users don’t even see that screen."

It broke something inside him. He wasn’t afraid of hard work. But invisible, meaningless work? That drained the soul.

He didn’t quit. He pivoted. He started asking one new question at the start of every task: "Who will care about this when it’s done?" That single shift gave him clarity and the courage to say no when it didn’t align.

His wife noticed the change too. "You’re not drained all the time anymore," she told him. "You actually smile when you talk about work."

That’s what happens when we reconnect with purpose.

From meaningless to magnetic

You weren’t meant to fill your time. You were meant to focus your fire.

Engineers don’t burn out from effort. They burn out from disconnect.

Plug back into purpose. And everything changes.
